Gramophone is proud to support Wells Cathedral School Foundation and help create a productive and creative environment for a new generation of young musicians at one of England's oldest independent schools (founded in 909). The next Prestige Concert, to raise money for the Foundation, sees the return of WCS alumnus Jamie Walton who will join the Wells Virtuosi & Symphony Orchestra in Elgar's Cello Concerto. The concert, which will be conducted by Matthew Souter, takes place in the Cathedral at Wells on Saturday, November 16 at 7pm. The programme also includes Respighi's Ancient Airs and Dances Suite No 3, Finzi's Romance and Mendelssohn's String Symphony No 9.

Tickets range from £10 to £20 and are available from the Box Office, Wells Cathedral School, Polydor House, 3 The Liberty, Wells BA5 2SS or telephone 01749 834483 for availability or by email boxoffice@wells-cathedral-school.com

Jamie Walton will also be featured on Sky Arts playing the three cello suites by Benjamin Britten in the days leading up to the centenary of Britten's birth on November 22. The suites, filmed during the course of a single day, will be shown at 8pm on November 17, then repeated at 8am on November 19 and again at 2pm on November 23. Writing in Gramophone about the performances of the suites, which are available from Signum Classics, Caroline Gill commented that 'far more should really be made of the mercurial qualities of the Britten: the frequent changes of metre and tempo, and technical demands that were so in line with Rostropovich’s own musical proclivities. Here is where Walton’s musical thought continues to deepen, with each movement taking the listener further into the tangle of complexities that the music has to offer, his spirited performance more closely channelling Rostropovich himself' (Awards issue 2013).
